SHIATSU TRAINING PROGRAM

THE SHIATSU training program is approved for 100 hours of shiatsu instruction. Shiatsu is an ancient form of acupressure passed through many cultures under many forums. The word actually means "finger pressure" and in this class, we will explore the different styles and techniques of this incredible form of bodywork.

A great advantage of shiatsu is that it can stand on its own as a practice or be easily incorporated into any existing form of massage. It works on the table or floor, clothed or draped, oil or dry, chair or standing, and may also be used as an effective form of self-massage. Shiatsu works with strengthening and releasing blockages on an energetic level as well as physical manipulation through the use of pressure points to help us restore and maintain our natural condition of health and harmony.

The shiatsu training program includes the following areas of instruction:

  • Eastern Tradition
  • Pressure Techniques
  • Point Location
  • Meridians
  • Yin Yang Theory
  • Client/Self Assessment
  • Shiatsu Form

As a foundation and general guideline, students will examine and work with the Traditional Chinese Medicine system of the Meridians (energy pathways) as well as incorporating the Namikoshi style of shiatsu from Japan. Other systems to be explored in the Shiatsu program will be Zen Style, and Chakras. Other techniques of shiatsu, Tui Na and Barefoot Shiatsu, will be offered through Advanced III along with Advanced Shiatsu, Shiatsu Face massage , Introduction to Table Shiatsu and Chair Shiatsu.

These different branches of the shiatsu tree exposes the practitioner to its many forms and applications of pressure techniques. It has long been thought that all shiatsu was only deep pressure. The student will learn how to safely apply pressure levels that they and the client are comfortable with. This pressure may be on a scale from light as a feather to creatively deep.

Students will be exposed to point location through the 12 basic meridians, yin/yang theory, and methods of client and self-assessment. Incorporating these fundamentals with detailed instruction on shiatsu forms, this course will allow the student the tools and options to expand their professional practice or use this for oneself, friends and family.

Instructor Gary Ruiz has attended and been certified by the Acupressure Institute and tutored with a Namikoshi Shiatsu Master. He shares a very successful private practice in Sonoma with his wife, Laura Dee Ruiz.
